“Meow-bius”: A Telepresence-Based Remote Human–Cat Interaction System

Status: Research Project (2024)
Role: Interaction Designer
Collaborating Institutions: Xiamen University, Fuzhou University, and Xiamen University of Technology
Competition: 2024 China–US Young Maker Competition
Award: National Excellence Award

This research explored telepresence-based interaction between companion cats and their caregivers during periods of separation. It developed an interactive system featuring a wearable haptic vest and a robotic cat companion, Twin Cat, which translated caregivers' touch input into movements such as tail wagging and paw raising.

Through iterative prototyping, device testing, and user feedback, the system was refined with a soft, fur-covered interface, a screen and camera for remote observation, and a cat nest designed to support observation of everyday feline activities. The research explored how tangible and remote interaction technologies could facilitate a sense of connection between cats and their caregivers while highlighting the importance of considering cats' responses to interactive feedback.
